When to Leave a Research Internship for an Industry ML Role

A strong internship creates three doors at once: convert, stay another cycle for a paper, or leave for a production team. The wrong reflex is to treat the return offer as the only success metric.
Convert when the work matches the job you want
Take the conversion if you liked the team's problem, you would still choose that stack in a year, and the level is not a courtesy offer. Ask what you would own in the first two quarters.
Stay for the paper only if it is real
Another semester is worth it when a submission has a venue, a coauthor who will still be there, and a result that is not already scooped. We might submit is not a plan.
Leave when production is the missing proof
If every artifact you have is a notebook or a workshop paper, an industry ML engineer seat can close that gap faster than a second internship. You can still publish from industry. You cannot fake a production incident on a CV.
