What the Role Is

A forward deployed engineer is a customer-facing software engineer who lives inside one account. Palantir calls the track Delta: one customer, many capabilities. Dev is the inverse: one capability, many customers.

You report into a deployment org, not a classic product pod. You sit with operators, write the integration that has to run Monday morning, and file the repeatable pieces back to product.

Palantir pioneered the Forward Deployed Software Engineer title. OpenAI stood up a Deployment Company on 11 May 2026 with more than $4 billion of initial investment and agreed to acquire Tomoro (about 150 FDEs and Deployment Specialists).

Anthropic and Scale AI post the same title. AWS said it would put $1 billion into embedding AI forward deployed engineers with customers.

Microsoft Frontier Company ($2.5 billion, 6,000 experts) builds on the FDE idea. Microsoft Frontier is not this occupation's headcount.

Palantir Foundry AI FDE is an agent SKU, not the job. Field engineer in construction or telecom is a different search.

On Reddit, the recurring filter is the revenue model: billed engineer hours versus a product sold at a flat rate.

Duties

You do production engineering in someone else's stack. A Palantir day-in-the-life and the live commercial Lever posting describe the same loop: scope the operational problem, ship software, stay for the outage.

Duties drawn from Palantir, OpenAI FDE SF, and Anthropic:

• Write the customer's operational problem as requirements, not a slide.
• Design and ship production software and integrations on the vendor platform (Foundry or Gotham, OpenAI models, Claude, Scale's data engine).
• Connect customer data and existing systems. Handle access control and compliance the core product does not already encode.
• Test, deploy, and debug in the customer's environment, including incidents.
• Sit with users and executives. Translate domain language into engineering work.
• Send repeatable field patterns back to product and research: platform features, evals, roadmaps, MCP artifacts.

This is not a sales quota, a pre-sale demo loop, or owning the vendor's core platform as a Dev. If the person only advises and hands a design off, you wrote a solutions architect posting.

The BLS software-developer median of $135,980 (May 2025) is the closest official analog. FDE is not SOC 15-1252.

Anthropic Munich, OpenAI London, and OpenAI Singapore postings in this window listed no cash band. Do not invent one.
